I mostly used sketchbooks as lyric writing books for maQLu and general catch-alls for to-do lists, etc. Even when writing music, there was a whole lot of doodling, cartooning, and collage going on in the margins, hence the inclusion of a few pages from the book in which I wrote songs for what would become the Malfeasance album, though a couple of them ended up not coming out until Divisive and still more might never come out.
All work in this book is from March to October, 2012.
Above: the front pages and the first draft of lyrics for what became “Persona Non Grata” (and which then didn’t actually come out on Malfeasance). Ink and pencil on paper, March 10/11 2012. The songs listed on the right actually ended up more on Divisive; I wrote other new ones later in the book for Malfeasance.
(Apple trees show up time and time again in my sketchbooks, almost always as doodles rather than planned drawings. I have 3 or 4 of them in the July and August 2016 art journals, and I found many in my high school sketchbooks and other books from the early 2000s as well.)
(Plan for a photo shoot I was going to do for promo pictures but in the end I just couldn’t justify spending a couple grand between the photographer, the make-up artist, and all the props I’d need and location rental.)
